1. Program Description
The VIA Online TESL Diploma program is designed for people wishing to pursue a career in Teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) but are either not based in Victoria, or do not have time to attend a classroom - based program. 
"The Communicative Approach" is incorporated into this program. The program consists of 10 courses that are taken successively. The practuicum is "stand-alone", which gives students the option to complete the practicum at a separate time after they finish the program.
Courses are comprised of readings from the text, questions based on the readings, and written assignments designed to explore the readings and assignments and to reveal the students understanding of them.
The VIA Online TESL Program promotes the philosophy of the "Communicative Approach" to train teachers in Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) with the goal of providing graduates with the confidence and ability to instruct students in multicultural environments. 

2. VIA TESL Diploma / TESL Canada Certification:
The VIA Online TESL Program is recognized by TESL Canada and emphasizes Communicative Language Teaching (CLT.) All successful applicants are eligible for the VIA Online TESL Diploma.
Graduates with a university degree are eligible to apply to TESL Canada for the TESL Canada Professional Certificate Standard One.

3. Requirements:
Students with a university degree and meet TESL Canada requirements for English level requirements will be eligible for the TESL Canada Professional Standard Level 1 Certificate. Students who have graduated from high school or are twenty-five years old or older, but do not have a university degree,.are eligible to take the Online TESL program. However, graduates without a university degree will not be eligible for the TESL Canada Professional Standard Level 1 Certificate.

4. Program Objectives:
Graduates of the VIA Online TESL Diploma Program will be able to apply Communicative Language Teaching, learned principles, theories, strategies, and practical classroom techniques and implement them successfully in effective ESL lessons.

Course 2	Learner Variables & Socio-political / Institutional Contexts (Chapter 6-8)
Course 3	Techniques, Textbooks & Technology, How to Plan a lesson (Chapters 9&10)
Course 4	Interactive Language Teaching: Initiating and Sustaining Interaction (Chapters10&11)
Course 5	Classroom Management & Strategies-Based Instruction (Chapters13&14)
Course 6	Speaking & Writing (Chapters 17&19)
Course 7	Listening and Reading (Chapters 16&18)
Course 8	Integrating the Four Skills: Content-Based Instruction (Chapter 15)
Course 9	Presentation, Practice & Production: Form-Focused Instruction (Chapter 20)
Course 10	Language Testing & Professional Development (Chapter 21-23)

6. Evaluation:
Evaluation is based on the quality of the answers to the assigned questions and the assignments, and submitted lesson plans. Students scoring 80% (cumulative) or better on the evaluation criteria quality for the VIA Online TESL Diploma. Grading criteria will be evaluated according to the following distribution of marks:

The VIA Online TESL Diploma Program has been recognized by TESL Canada (www.tesl.ca)  
It is not registered with PCTIA.
